The short answer is, everyone.

Many people never do a backup of their personal data, much less their website. I can say from personal experience that having a backup of your personal and website data is VERY important.

About 2 months ago my computer network and systems were hit by lightning, and I lost most of my computers and network devices. I was very lucky because some of the equipment was powered off at the time. As a result, I was able to recover my data even though I have to replace all of my equipment. For backup, I had copied much of the data to other computers on my network, and I had been using Carbonite, an online backup service. So between unplugged computer disk drives and Carbonite, I was able to recover all of my data.

This experience drives home the need to have offsite backup of your important data like documents, music, pictures and websites. Two things that people do wrong are:

  • Make a backup of their data and store it next to the computer.
This is great if you accidentally delete a file you can recover it easily. However, if there is a fire in that room both the computer and the backup will be destroyed, and then you have nothing.
  • Make a backup and never check to be sure that it is good.
Over the years I have seen many people go through the backup process and then when they needed the backup discover that the backup did not actually run, or did not complete successfully and their backup is no good.

Your website is important to your business; it is a good idea to have a backup of the website. Here are two reasons:

  • The company doing your hosting may go out of business.
  • You let your hosting account expire and the hosting company deletes your site.

The bottom line: Be sure that you do your backups and save a copy in another location.
